Down Under
(Australia)
By Dimitri Jovanovic
I
got my first pair of this beautiful breed in 2012. Bred down
from an OGO import in the mid 2000s, a Blue bar and Blue
check bird.
Here is Australia, fanciers played around and made some
different colours in bared
birds: mealy, silver and cream.
In check birds: yellow, red
and silver. Most birds lacked
the high feather in crest and
rosette placement. None of
these were in solid colours like
spread black and closed dark- t
check like those found in the
reds and yellows around the
world.
I decided to start the pro-
cess to import from Germany
some of these birds mentioned
above in 2016 for colour and a
better crest and rosette place-
ment – which in turn arrived
early 2018.
Since 2018 I’ve slowly
but surely made slow inroads
in developing a stud as close
to the standard with an assortment of new colours with small
stocky powerful birds which are to my liking.
It can be at times frustrating as you think you may have the
perfect mating only to be let
down at the young that come
out. So you persevere with
another mating and then you
breed a ripper that makes it all
that rewarding.!
My technique is select-
ing a small typey hen with a
powerful cock that both com-
pliment each other’s faults.
Cause let’s face it – who has
the perfect birds? My birds are
far from finished and a work
in progress with a long way to
go. Pictured are my first pair
from 2012.
At my first National
appearance I was fortunate
enough to pick up Best
Opposite sex in 2016 in
Melbourne.•
Two birds I started with back in 2012 which I still have.
