John had a pair of Smerles with him for sale. Syndi and I went

and looked at them and decided to buy them. We did attempt to

make contact with the Tumbler breeder but that never happened.

However, Syndi seemed very excited about another breed that I

had never seen before – yes, Old German Owls.

She showed me the birds and said, “You need to get these,

they are beautiful.” I couldn’t have agreed more. The young man

who was sitting by the birds seemed extremely busy and also had

lots of people talking to him. Unfortunately, we never made con-

tact with him at the show.

Over the next few weeks Syndi and I (via the Internet) at-

tempted to figure out who might have been the breeder of the Old

German Owls at the show. We both joined the Old German Owl

Club and Facebook page. Syndi finally identified him as Baskar

Anjappan and he lived just 60 miles away. With hopes now to

contact him and see his birds and loft, I waited for Syndi to set

something up but being a little bit shy that didn’t happen. So I

decided to friend him on Facebook and open a line communica-

tion with him.

Baskar was very open and incredibly enthusiastic about Old

German Owls and was more that willing to help if we were inter-

ested in becoming involved with them. We arranged a date to visit

him and pick up some OGOs that were experienced breeders and

would give us a nice start in the breed. We purchased three pairs

from him and started a breeding program last April.

Our first breeding season was exciting, fun and a bit disap-

pointing as well. Disappointment mostly due to our inexperience

with a need to learn so much so quickly. We did end up banding 11

OGOs that first breeding season with a couple that were show worthy.

Season two has started out much better and to date we’ve

banded seven babies and have five pairs sitting on eggs or raising

babies as I write this article.

In closing, I want to thank Baskar for all his encouragement

and mentoring. Additionally, thanks to all the people we’ve met at

the shows we’ve attended. Everyone has been very nice, very open

and helpful. •
