Changes in the Breed

By Bob Kuzminski

I

will start by saying the last few years

have been a great experience for me.

Showing Bald Head Rollers for the

last 30 years, becoming a Master Breeder,

introducing six new colors to the show

arena, winning eight nationals, and many

Reserve Champions over the past years –

after all my accomplishments it was just

not as exciting as years past.

Five years ago my brother Len was

looking for a new breed of pigeons to

breed. Len had been a Master Breeder of

Danzing High Flyers for the past 20 years.

Len wanted to start showing a different

breed of pigeons. After talking with some

Old German Owl members Len was hooked.

I have raised Old German Owls since

2002, showing at a few shows here and

there. I won the Louisville National in

2010 when club members seemed to be

losing interest in Old German Owls. That

year Old German Owls were shown in the

Rare Breeds Club, with only 12 birds being

shown that year. That year my Young Blue

Check Hen had a score of 97.

There has been a big difference in 15

years. At the 2018 Louisville National Show

there were 170 birds entered. That year

my brother Len won. In 2019 Louisville

had 184 birds entered with Bill Henderson

winning Champion, and Len Reserve plus

First Reserve champion.

As all great Pigeon Breeders know Len

looked into the standard, the point system,

and what to look for in an Old German Owl.

Len talked to some of the top breeders of

Old German Owls. Len has help from Mike

Spencer, Chet Edmunds, Bill Henderson,

Jeff Wozniak, and many others. Len built

his own bloodline of Old German Owls.

He chose the best from each breeder and

made his own bloodlines. Len’s results in

the showroom have been outstanding in

the last few years. He has been winning

shows of 100 entries with different judges.

Watching my brother become a two-time

Master Breeder in Old German Owls in just

over five years has shown his accomplish-

ments. It has been a pleasure showing with

my brother Len, and watching him succeed

as a breeder.

Since I started this article the Old

German Owl Club has welcomed new

members. In the last few years we have

welcomed many new members, and we

keep growing.•
