65 – Purebred PIGEON

Vincent A.DeVitoSr.

My name is Vincent A. DeVito, Sr. and I am now eighty two years

old. I’ve had pigeons all my life. For fifty three years I had Racing

Pigeons and was partners with my father. We flew under the name

Terrace Loft. Most of our racing was out of the Bronx, New York clubs

which were in a four square mile area; five clubs in all. This was a

very strong competition.

Today from what I understand the whole Bronx itself has only

one club left; what happened? The answer is people unfortunately

have passed on and others have given up on racing. Regardless of

the reasons this is very sad; at least from my perspective. The reason

I am writing this article is about two men that I know, who made it

their business to not the let the great hobby of pigeons die.

These two gentlemen; Sal Gigante and Andrew Franze do a great

job. Sal started the Big Apple Show. It is probably the one of the big-

gest shows in the country. Thank you Sal, for everything. The other

gentleman; Andrew Franze, he is nonstop in the Big Apple Show and

as well as his excellent business at Andrews Feed and Supply store.

Great job Andrew.

I wanted to thank my son for being my partner for many years

with the Danishes that I also have kept now and then, so thank

you Vinny. Finally, I want to mention that for most of us guys we

all started at Sam’s Hay and Feed store on Boston Post Road in the

Bronx. A lot of stories were told around that pot belly stove.

In the times of today, what our country is going through, let’s

stand strong and keep our hobby alive.•
