Baskar’s Old German Owl Loft

By Baskar Anjappan

I

am Baskar Anjappan from

Northern California. I was

born and raised in the

southern part of India (Chennai

City). In 1991 when I was in

middle school, I got my first

pair of Homers with two babies

to keep as pets. I started my

pigeon hobby with one of my

best friends, Sridhar Bala and his

brother Sethu, who used to live in

the same neighborhood. My friend

Sridhar and I saved our pocket

money to buy four birds and later

we bought three pairs of fancy

pigeons. As a youngster that was

a huge undertaking.

Now I live in California and

my friend lives in New Jersey. As

with other pigeon fanciers, we

kept buying birds. After a year, I

started keeping birds at my place.

As time progressed we both could

not find any time to keep pets

as we started focusing on our college

education and job futures.

I restarted my hobby by buying

one pair of Old German Owls – red

shields, from Tim Kovatch in the Santa

Cruz area. Tim was great to sell me one

nice pair in February of 2016. Later

I bought birds from YH loft, Chet Ed-

munds, Jeffery Wozniak, Mike Spencer,

Kay Kast and Keith Chadd. There was

great support from the OGO club

members to sell me some birds.

I started focusing on only

black shield, yellow shield and red

shield birds. But I do have few

other colors like blue check, red

check and one pair of blue bar.

Black shield birds were

imported from Canada and Jeff

Wozniak was so generous to sell

some of his imports. Red shield

birds are directly from Victor

Herner in Canada. Victor bought

five pairs of reds from Germany

when he visited a pigeon show.

These red shield birds were from

German breeder Warner Gockel,

one of the top breeders who fo-

cuses only on red shield OGOs.

Importing birds from other

countries like Germany and/or

Canada is not easy. There many

breeders who have vast amounts

of experience in importing birds.

I am very lucky to have them

from both Jeffery Wozniak and Victor

Herner.

I have been showing birds for

the last three years and I’m happy

with the progress I’ve made. My best

performances at the shows are:

Champion of the show - Red

shield, Band #1965 - 35 entries and 5

exhibitors at NorCal Pigeon Fancier

show, California (2018)

Some of best the birds with best crest and rosettes.
